Step 1 — Create an Agent User in BasicOps
Before connecting, you need to create a dedicated agent account in BasicOps. If you haven't already, please read this guide.
Step 2 — Find the Template
- Go to gumloop.com/templates/basicops-team-member
- Click the template and deploy it to your Gumloop workspace
Step 3 — Start the Setup in Gumloop
- Open your newly deployed Gumloop agent
- In the chat, type: "Set up my BasicOps connection"
- The agent will walk you through the remaining steps
Step 4 — Connect the BasicOps MCP Server
Once you have the chat open in a second window:
- In the Gumloop sidebar, click + Connector
- Select the Custom MCP button → +Add MCP Server
- In the URL field, enter:
https://app.basicops.com/mcp?agent=YOUR-AGENT-NAMEReplace YOUR-AGENT-NAME with the lowercase, hyphenated version of your agent's name (e.g. for Atlas → https://app.basicops.com/mcp?agent=atlas)
- Click Connect
- Authorize by logging into BasicOps
- On the "Grant Permission" screen in BasicOps, select your agent account (e.g. Atlas) from the list
⚠️ Critical: Make sure you select the agent account you created in Step 1 — NOT your own personal BasicOps account. Selecting the wrong account here is the most common cause of the connection not working.
- Click Allow
- Back in Gumloop, find the newly added MCP server, click + to add it to your agent, then click Save
Step 5 — Verify the Connection
After saving, tell the agent: "it's saved"
The agent will call BasicOps to verify the identity of the connected account. It should confirm the name matches the agent you created in Step 1.
- ✅ If it matches — proceed
- ❌ If it shows your personal name or someone else's — remove the MCP server and repeat Step 4, making sure to select the correct agent account during authorization
Once verified, refresh your browser before continuing.
Step 6 — Add Your Gumloop API Key
The agent needs a Gumloop API key to receive messages from BasicOps:
- Go to Settings → Apps in Gumloop and locate Gumloop API Key — generate one if needed, then copy the value
- Go to Settings → Secrets and click Add Secret — name it API_KEY, paste the value, click Create
- Open this agent's Settings tab → Secrets → + Secret — select the API_KEY secret, click the checkmark to confirm, then click Save at the top
💡 Use the separate browser window from Step 4 to keep your instructions visible while navigating away.
Step 7 — Register the Connection
Tell the agent you're done (e.g. "it's done"). The agent will automatically register the connection between Gumloop and BasicOps. You'll see a confirmation when it's complete.
Step 8 — Test It
Go to BasicOps and send the agent a direct message — something like "Are you there?" You should receive a reply within a few seconds.
If you don't receive a reply:
- Check your Gumloop agent's run history — if there are zero runs after sending the message, the event isn't reaching Gumloop. Re-check Step 4 and confirm the correct agent account was selected during authorization.
- Check that the API key added in Step 6 is valid and hasn't expired.
Setup complete! Your Gumloop agent is now a full member of your BasicOps workspace. You can assign it tasks, mention it in messages, or chat with it directly.
Troubleshooting
If you are having trouble with setting up your Gumloop Agent, you can either ask the agent directly in Gumloop for help, or contact BasicOps Support.
