BasicOps gives you several ways to communicate with your team, stay on top of your projects, and share timely information. Here's a breakdown of each method and when to use it.
This article will cover:
- Chat
- Discussions
- Chat vs. Discussions at a glance
- Mentioning teammates with @
- Linking to a project or task
- Search
Chat
Use chat to reach any BasicOps user in a one-to-one or group conversation. Chat is great for quick, real-time exchanges — whether you're discussing a project, asking a question, or coordinating on something unrelated to work. BasicOps notifies all chat participants in-app and via email (if they have notifications enabled), so they'll see the message even if they're not actively using BasicOps at that moment.
Discussions
Discussions are the best way to collaborate around a specific project or task. When you start a discussion, all team members with access are notified automatically — you don't need to select individual participants. Everyone can contribute, add context, and attach relevant files. Because discussions live inside the project or task, the conversation stays with the work and is easy to find later.

Mentioning teammates with @
To get a specific teammate's attention, mention them with @ in a chat message, discussion, or project or task description. Type @ followed by their name and select them from the dropdown. The person you mention will receive a notification in their Feed under the Mentions tab.
Linking to a project or task
You can drop a direct link to any project or task into a chat, discussion, note, or description using #. Type # followed by the project or task name and select it from the dropdown. Anyone who sees it can click the link to go straight to that item.
Search
As projects grow, finding a specific message or note gets harder. Use Search in the left sidebar to look across chat messages, discussions, notes, and descriptions all at once. Type any keyword — a user's name, a project name, a task, or a phrase from a conversation — and BasicOps will surface matching results.
